Safety Comes First - The Importance of Winter Tires

Safety First!
If a vehicle is equipped with all season tires, are winter tires really necessary? The answer depends on where the vehicle will be driven, remaining tread on the all season tires and other factors. In most cases, winter tires will provide an advantage on winter roads.
All season tires are an improvement over performance tires but do not perform as well on snow and ice. Winter tires are designed to stop faster on ice, grip better in snow, and force out snow and slush from the tread without build-up. They also remain flexible in cold temperatures, a quality that all season tires don’t have. When comparing winter tires vs. all season tires in poor road conditions, winter tires definitely have the edge.
Anyone considering winter tires should know that they need to purchase four winter tires regardless of whether the vehicle is rear-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive. Pairing two winter tires with all season tires may result in very poor vehicle handling, making the winter tires less effective and winter driving unsafe.
The peace of mind, handling and safety that comes with driving with winter tires is well worth the expense especially when greater confidence is achieved every time that journey is taken down that treacherous wintery road.
The following set of 6 videos is brought to you by the Automobile Protection Association in conjunction with the experts at Transport Canada, showing the benefits of winter tires.
